Founded in 1977, the American Women's Club of Oakville(AWCO) is a non-profit organization which serves both the community and its members. The club is open to U.S. born and naturalized citizens residing in the Halton and peel regions of Ontario.
There are American Women's Clubs around the world. For many years, American women living in Oakville traveled into meetings of the American Women's Club of Toronto (AWCT) founded in 1917. The distance and time involved was a problem for many and eventually Oakville members met with representatives of the AWCT to discuss the formation of an Oakville. The AWCO Founding Members from the AWCT met on May 31, 1977 and the American Women's Club of Oakville came into being.
In existence for almost 35 years (we're celebrating our 35th anniversary May, 2012), the AWCO has fostered friendship among members, some of whom have settled permanently into the area. In 2010, it admitted men, as do other AWCs. It brings together newly arrived Americans with seasoned members to provide fellowship and support with multiple social activities for assimilation into the community. Social activities have included car rallies, super bowl parties, dances, curling and picnics.
The club encourages members to be American "Goodwill Ambassadors" through participation in philanthropic and civic service to the community through a wide variety of local organizations.
